Done in 2983ebe. The unrelated matplotlib fix (from PR #228 that was accidentally merged into this branch) has been reverted. The PR diff against main now only shows the Note: a true history rebase wasn't possible since force-pushing isn't available to me, but the net effect is the same — only the pre-commit upgrade is reflected in the PR diff. |

Pass clear=True to plt.subplots() in _init_plot so that reusing a figure number (as done in MatPlot.clear()) no longer raises a ValueError in matplotlib >= 3.11.
Fix MatPlot.clear() crash with matplotlib 3.11+
