Memory leaking issues

It seems since about a week or so that the JSON gem can allocate loads of memory (16+ GiB!), this issue does not reoccur if Debugbar is disabled from its config or uninstalled.

Any idea what could cause this or how to subvert it?
I am asking it here as it occurs and stops occuring by enabbling and disabling Debugbar.

not 100% sure because i am also fairly new to the rails ecosystem, but does the debugbar maybe limit the version of the JSON gem, so when the debugbar is installed you are using an older version of JSON?
