Major rework: initial support for multiplots

This is a BIG internal patch to support multiplots and (by necessity) to clean
stuff up. EVERYTHING THAT WORKED PREVIOUSLY SHOULD STILL WORK. My tests tell me
that things are functional, but I don't have a reliable test suite, so not
releasing (or even documenting) this just yet
