DS1821+ not working: aqc111 driver loads then is immediately removed on DSM 7.3.2

Description

DS1821+ is not working.
The driver downloads successfully, but when I run it, DSM reports that the driver needs to be fixed.

• The aqc111 driver loads successfully
• The network interface eth4 is created
• The interface is briefly handled by OVS
• The driver is then immediately removed without any error or crash
• DSM UI shows “Driver needs to be fixed”

Additional notes

• The driver does not crash (no kernel oops, panic, or USB disconnect)
• The module is removed via a clean unload
• This behavior is repeatable
• According to the compatibility list, DS1821+ + QNA-UC5G1T is reported as working, so this may be related to DSM 7.3.x or network stack changes

Is DSM 7.3.2 still supported for DS1821+ (v1000) with AQC111, or is there a known issue with this DSM version or network stack that causes the driver to be unloaded?

Clean reload procedure for r8152 USB Ethernet driver (DSM 7.x)

If the USB Realtek Ethernet driver (RTL8156 / RTL8157) behaves abnormally, follow the steps below to cleanly reload the driver.

---

1. Check whether the driver module is loaded

lsmod | egrep '^r8152|^usbnet|^mii'

If r8152 is listed, continue with the next step.

2. Method A (Recommended): Cleanly unload the driver module

Note: usbnet and mii may be used by other USB devices.
Only remove r8152 unless it cannot be unloaded.

Attempt to remove the module:

rmmod r8152 || modprobe -r r8152

If the module is reported as “in use”, check which interfaces are active:

ip link show eth4 2>/dev/null
ip link show ovs_eth4 2>/dev/null

Bring the related interfaces down and remove OVS bindings:

ifconfig ovs_eth4 down 2>/dev/null || true
ovs-vsctl del-port ovs_eth4 eth4 2>/dev/null || true
ovs-vsctl del-br ovs_eth4 2>/dev/null || true
ifconfig eth4 down 2>/dev/null || true

Then retry unloading the module:

modprobe -r r8152

3. Method B (Simplest): Reboot the system

If you prefer not to manually remove interfaces and OVS bridges:

reboot

After reboot, do not run the script multiple times.
Run it once only:

bash -x /var/packages/r8152/scripts/start-stop-status start

Important notes

• The driver may work correctly even if Package Center shows the package as “Stopped”.

• Package Center status reflects script execution, not actual driver activity.

• Always verify functionality using:

  • lsmod
  • ip link
  • real traffic tests (e.g. iperf3)

If the interface is UP and traffic passes, the driver is working as expected.
